From NYC Streets to Global Phenomenon: The Sprayground Brand Story

There was a time when backpacks were just backpacks functional, unremarkable, almost invisible. That time is long gone.

Sprayground didn't just enter the backpack market; it detonated it. Founded in 2010 by a Bronx-born artist with a rebellious vision, the brand transformed a mundane utility item into a cultural statement. Today, Sprayground has a presence in more than 90 countries and has been worn by celebrities including Kendall Jenner, Megan Thee Stallion, Paris Hilton, 50 Cent, and Snoop Dogg.

This is the story of how one man's frustration with boring bags became a global movement.

The Founder: David BenDavid (DBD)

From NYC Streets to Global Phenomenon: The Sprayground Brand Story 1

David BenDavid was born in the Bronx, New York, and raised by his mother and sisters. His early exposure to fashion through them laid the foundation for his creative journey.

"They were my first fashion teachers, introducing me to the world of fashion and instilling in me the importance of self-expression and creativity," he explains.

BenDavid studied graphic design at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Art was always an integral part of his identity.  "During my upbringing, I would spend a significant amount of my free time nurturing my creativity," he recalls.

The Spark: A Broken Backpack

The idea for Sprayground came from a moment of frustration.

"I started Sprayground because I noticed a lack of creativity in backpacks," BenDavid says. "I felt the need to think outside the box and create something that people would be excited to wear. While I was traveling, I had this boring backpack that broke one day. As I searched for a new bag, I realized that all the bags looked the same".

That realization that backpacks had become a design vacuum became the foundation for everything that followed.

The First Design: "Hello My Name Is"

BenDavid's first creation was the "Hello My Name Is" backpack. The design was simple but brilliant: it borrowed the iconic "Hello, My Name Is" name tag format and applied it to a backpack.

"It all began with my first design 'Hello My Name Is', which became a classic hit." BenDavid recalls.

The design resonated immediately. It was playful, recognizable, and completely unlike anything else on the market.

The Breakthrough: "Money Stacks"and Celebrity Validation

Then came the "Money Stacks" design. This was the moment everything changed.

"The 'Money Stacks' design hit shelves, and the next day, many celebrities were photographed wearing it." BenDavid says. "This confirmed that the bag has the potential to be an iconic fashion statement piece".

Suddenly, Sprayground wasn't just a quirky backpack brand it was a fashion phenomenon.

Overcoming Doubt: The "One Hit Wonder" Moment

Success didn't come without skeptics.

"People thought we were a one hit wonder." BenDavid recalls. "I remember doing our first trade show, and I was getting all these haters, I don't know, maybe they were jealous. Maybe they couldn't see it because everyone was doing t-shirts and apparel. And our booth was something different".

The criticism could have been crushing. Instead, it became fuel.

"I thought about that for a few days, like, 'oh, just a one hit wonder.' And then I changed everything." BenDavid says.

 The "Sold Out Forever" Ethos

BenDavid made a pivotal decision: he would produce everything in limited quantities, never to be made again.

"I started to create smaller collections," he explains. "Everything limited edition and never produced again. That promise is on the tag, on the inner label. That's been the brand ethos, because I wanted everyone to feel the individuality. I wanted people to not have that same bag that everybody else has. I didn't want to create some boring run of the mill thing".

This "Sold Out Forever" policy became the brand's defining characteristic and its competitive moat.

 Global Expansion

From its Bronx beginnings, Sprayground expanded rapidly. The brand now has a presence in 30 countries with over 20 distributors and can be found in pop-up events that blur the line between retail and art installation.

New York Fashion Week: The Couture Moment

Sprayground's ascent was underscored by its historic runway show at New York Fashion Week. The event showcased 50 meticulously crafted couture outfits utilizing re-imagined bags from the Spring collection.

"NYFW is always a dream come true in every aspect," BenDavid recalls. "It is an incredible feeling to introduce Sprayground to a broader audience and generate excitement about our collections".

 Collaborations: A Cultural Playlist

Sprayground's collaborations read like a playlist curated by culture itself. Partners have included:

- Shaquille O'Neal

- Marvel

- Lamborghini

- Bruce Lee

- Spike Lee

- Porsche and Formula 1

- The Metropolitan Museum of Art

- Keith Haring

- Angry Birds

Whether riffing on comic book nostalgia or luxury sports, the designs "never feel like merchandise. They feel like expressions".

The Brand DNA: Rebellion, Creativity, Exclusivity

Sprayground's success isn't an accident. Its DNA is built on three pillars: Rebellion, Creativity, and Exclusivity.

The brand has focused on ending the era of "boring backpacks" by blending high-street fashion with rugged functionality. By using avant-garde visuals, pop-culture collaborations, and a limited-run model, Sprayground has turned a commodity into a collectible.

What's Next

Fifteen years in, Sprayground is only getting louder. The brand has plans to expand into tech accessories, apparel, immersive art installations, and concept stores.

BenDavid doesn't see these spaces as boutiques — "he sees them as creative arenas. Places where art, fashion, and music intersect and where youth expression takes the lead". The vision includes mentorship programs and cultural hubs that give back to the creative community.

Conclusion

From a broken backpack on a trip to a global streetwear empire, Sprayground's story is one of vision, persistence, and unapologetic self-expression.

"For BenDavid, it has always been about offering something real to people who want to be seen and heard". Sprayground proves that style doesn't have to whisper. For a generation tired of silent conformity, this streetwear backpack brand offers something louder and more interesting.
